Stress fracture

What is it?

A stress fracture is an incomplete fracture or ‘crack’ in the bone. They develop because of repeated stress or overuse. Pain from a stress fracture often starts gradually. It can be worse during walking or running or when you touch the area. You might also feel pain when resting or throughout the night.

Some things that may lead to stress fractures are:

  • Long distance running
  • Not resting the area enough

How can Our Podiatrist help?

At Our Podiatrist we can diagnose the problem and confirm it with imaging such as x-ray or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Treatment can include:

  • Controlled Ankle Movement (CAM) boot (sometimes called a ‘moon boot’) to allow the fracture to heal
  • Orthotics to ensure the fracture does not return
  • Footwear changes
  • Training advice

LisFranc Joint Injury

What is it?

This is a sprain of the “midfoot” (the middle part of your foot). You might feel pain on the top part of your foot and have trouble walking. The area may be swollen and tender to touch. It can also be painful to point your toes down.

Some things that may lead to a LisFranc Joint Injury are:

  • A fall
  • Landing hard on your toes while playing sport

How can Our Podiatrist help?

If this injury is not treated or picked up early it can lead to long-term pain and problems. At Our Podiatrist we can assess and diagnose the problem and create a rehabilitation plan for you.

Treatment can include:

  • Below the knee cast/brace
  • Surgery in some cases
  • Orthotics
  • Supportive footwear

Neuroma

What is it?

A neuroma is a compressed nerve between the toes. The pain from a neuroma can develop slowly. You might feel a burning pain radiating into the toe, numbness or pins and needles. Walking in tight footwear or running may make the pain worse.

Some things that may lead to a neuroma are:

  • Wearing shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Abnormal ways of walking

How can Our Podiatrist help?

At Our Podiatrist we can assess, diagnose and manage neuroma pain successfully. Imaging such as ultrasound may be needed.

Treatment can include:

  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Padding
  • Orthotics
