The toe joint feels painful during movement, such as walking or dancing. The pain can feel worse when wearing high-heels.

Hammer Toes

What is it?

Hammer toes are toes that are bent in an odd position, sometimes like a claw. They are caused by tight muscles underneath the foot. Hammer toes might cause throbbing pain underneath the toes or in the arch of your foot. Straightening the toes may become difficult and you may experience pain when wearing shoes. Sometimes people with hammer toes also get corns and callous on their feet.

Some things that may lead to hammer toes are:

  • Wearing shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Family history of hammer toes
  • Repeated foot pronation (feet turning in) when walking
  • Previous injury to the toe or foot
  • Infection
  • Arthritis
  • Some neurological and muscle disorders

How can our Podiatrist help?

Our Podiatrist can assess and treat hammer toe deformities.

Treatment can include:

  • Footwear changes
  • Padding and silicon gel cushions
  • Orthotics
  • Surgery in some cases

Plantar Plate Tear

What is it?

A plantar plate tear is when there is a small tear in the thick ligament that joins all 5 toes together. This causes sharp pain under the foot, especially the 2nd toe. Walking or moving up and down a ladder often makes pain worse.

Some things that may lead to a plantar plate tear are:

  • Wearing high-heeled shoes
  • Repeated foot pronation (foot turning in) when walking
  • Tradesmen working on ladders
  • Already having bunions or osteoarthritis

How can our Podiatrist help?

Our Podiatrist can assess and diagnoses plantar plate tear. Often ultrasound imaging is needed to see the severity of the injury.

Treatment can include:

  • Taping
  • Footwear changes
  • Modifying the way you do certain activities
  • Padding
  • Orthotics
  • Surgery in some cases

Sesamoid injuries

What is it?

Sesamoid injuries are injuries to the small bones underneath the big toe joint. This can cause pain when walking. Some people try to reduce the pain by walking on the outside of their foot.

Some things that may lead to sesamoid injuries are:

  • Repetitive overuse or loading on the foot
  • An injury from landing, jumping or twisting on the ball of the foot
  • Sports such as AFL, soccer, netball, running and dancing.

How can our Podiatrist help?

At Our Podiatrist we can assess, diagnose and manage sesamoid injuries. An x-ray may be needed to get an accurate diagnosis of the injury.

  • Padding
